CEQA Basics

The California Environmental Quality Act or CEQA is the statute that requires state and local agencies to identify the significant environmental impacts of their actions and to avoid or mitigate those impacts where feasible. This is the first of two CEQA webinars focusing on how potential historic resource impacts are considered in the development review process.

We will begin with an overview of how historic resources and potentially significant impacts are defined, avoided, mitigated and disclosed in the CEQA process from an environmental consultant perspective. Then we will hear about current legal issues and discuss upcoming potential proposals to change the legislation from the legal perspective.

Objectives

1. Increased knowledge of CEQA basic definitions and framework in agency environmental review
2. Review why historic resource significance criteria and impact thresholds are important
3. Review significant current CEQA historic resource case law
4. Discuss Potential upcoming proposed changes to CEQA
