Materials Conservation – Masonry

Masonry facades of terra cotta, brick and stone deteriorate from environmental factors, structural issues, and problems in the original design and construction.  Accurate diagnosis of the cause of distress is critical to designing long lasting repairs as is communicating the repairs on the construction documents and working with the masons to implement the repairs.  This webinar give a whirlwind tour with some key takeaways of the masonry facade repair process from investigation through construction.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the different types of masonry units and the common configurations of masonry walls.
  2. Recognize signs of masonry deterioration and their causes.
  3. Learn the most common repair techniques:  cleaning, repointing, patching, dutchmen, retooling and replacement.
  4. Gain tips on the construction document, bidding and construction process.
