Historic Register Designation

Each step in the process of designating historic resources will be examined, from the basic windshield survey, to the completion of a DPR 523 form, to a full National Register nomination. Participants will understand how to craft a nomination that is more likely to be designated and will also examine the basic structure and organization of standardized forms.

Learning Objectives

  1. Using case examples from past nominations, engage with best practices for nominating a site to the local, state, and national register.
  2. Identify the range of implications of designation, from financial incentives to potential design limitations.
  3. Use examples of nomination forms, including the DPR 523 and NPS Form 10-900 for National Register Nominations.
  4. Practice a number of field methods for documentation, including recordation that is required or recommended for nominations.
