Join a Committee

California Preservation Foundation has a number of committees to help support CPF’s Mission. To find out more about each committee, click the name of each committee to see its full description. If you are interested in volunteering on a committee please submit the Committee Application Form below.

Committee Application Form
Annually, the CPF Board of Trustees considers appointments to its committees. During the year, there may be opportunities to serve on various committees and task forces, as well as other volunteer projects. The Board desires to broaden the participation of CPF members, so we welcome applications from preservationists from all walks of life and communities in the state.

Conference Committee. The Conference Committee includes a Steering Committee and a Programs Committee, who together plan the major aspects of the annual conference. Working directly under  PF staff, the Conference Committees are responsible for developing educational tracks, coordinating events, recruiting volunteers, and helping to publicize the conference within the region. We estimate 4-7 hours of volunteer commitment per month for the six months of early planning for the conference and 1-3 hours for the final six months of this appointment. 

Development Committee. The Development Committee ensures the financial security of CPF by proposing and implementing underwriting and fundraising campaigns. Composed of Board members and non-members, this committee raises funds for CPF Programs and Workshops as well as the annual California Preservation Conference, and seeks grant opportunities that will support CPF’s mission. This committee is by appointment only.

Doors Open California Committee. Doors Open California is the largest statewide celebration of historic places in California. Enthusiasts of historic architecture, design, and cultural heritage will have access to dozens of sites across the state over one weekend once a year. The places featured in Doors Open California are places experiences typically not open to the public but made available specifically for this event. The Doors Open Committee includes representatives from six regions that span the entire state of California. Each committee member is responsible for their assigned region in California and will be paired up with at least one (and potentially more than one) co-chairs within their region to work together on Doors Open sites, opportunities, and sponsorship prospects. We estimate 2-5 hours of volunteer commitment per month for this opportunity.

Education Committee. The Education Committee assists in proposing workshops, webinars, tours, conference sessions, and mobile workshops; developing the content of these programs; and identifying and recruiting qualified speakers. The Education Committee serves as a sounding board when new initiatives are proposed or developed, and helps to promote CPF’s educational programs. We estimate 4-7 hours of volunteer commitment per month for this opportunity.

Scholarship & Higher Education Subcommittee. The Scholarship & Higher Education Subcommittee (a smaller group within the Education Committee) helps inform and develop CPF’s support of student involvement in preservation. The subcommittee selects students for the Annual Conference Scholarship award based on submitted abstracts and recommends promising students for roles within CPF’s decision-making committees. This subcommittee is a key advisory group in selecting students for our three annual scholarships. Subcommittee members should either represent an academic department in a college or university, or be mentor, trainer, or educator to students interested or engaged in historic preservation broadly (including public history, history, engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, etc). We estimate 1-3 hours of volunteer commitment per month for this opportunity.

Advocacy Committee
The Advocacy Committee is composed of Board members and non-members. It supports the advocacy mission of CPF by evaluating and acting on requests for advocacy assistance. The Committee also advises on legal issues, strategies, potential legislation and other policy issues. This committee is by appointment only.

Awards Committee
Made up of Board members and non-members, the Awards Committee supports the advocacy mission of CPF. This committee is responsible for coordinating the annual Preservation Design Awards program as well as the President’s Awards ceremony at the Annual Conference. The Awards Committee is also responsible for monitoring and tracking award-winning efforts on a continual basis. This committee is by appointment only.

Board Development Committee
The Board Development Committee is responsible for proposing a slate of Trustees for approval by the Board prior to the annual membership meeting at the California Preservation Conference, and for ensuring timely public notice of the slate and election. The committee also recommends candidates to fill board vacancies that occur between regular yearly elections. This committee is by appointment only.

Communications Committee
The Communications Committee helps to identify articles and items of interest to CPF’s members and constituents for inclusion in the monthly newsletter and social media; helps to vet submitted content; and identifies potential authors or subjects for feature newsletter articles. The Communications Committee works directly with the Engagement Director. We estimate 1-3 hours of volunteer commitment per month for this opportunity.

Executive Committee
Composed of the Officers of the Board and other Board members as may be deemed appropriate, the Executive Committee is responsible for day-to-day decision-making in matters of policy and implementation, subject to appropriate ratification by the full Board. The Executive Committee is also charged with legal, fiscal, and operational responsibilities, and with the Board as a whole, overseeing the long-range planning functions necessary for the organization’s financial stability and growth. This committee is by appointment only.

Easement Committee
The Easement Committee, which includes CPF’s Executive Director, Board members and non-members, is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the easement program as well as ensuring that legal obligations pertaining to easements are carried out.

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is responsible for the retention and recruitment of members of the organization. Composed of board members and non-members and working with CPF staff, the committee tracks membership composition, determines membership categories, and monitors membership renewal efforts. The Membership Committee oversees the maintenance of membership records and works to develop programs to expand and diversify membership. This committee is by appointment only.

Strategic Plan Committee
The Executive Committee and the Executive Director serve on the Strategic Plan Committee to develop, prioritize, and implement long-term planning goals for the organization. This committee is by appointment only.
