Fortress at Carcassonne, France. The Cité de Carcassonne is a medieval citadel located in the French city of Carcassonne. The citadel was restored at the end of the 19th century by Eugene-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, and in 1997 it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. To commemorate its 20 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the National Centre for National Monuments engaged Swiss artist Felice Varini to create concentric yellow circles, which were made from aluminum and attached to the fortress’s walls. The artwork was maintained through 2018.
