Assistant/Associate Planner

Position Description


Assistant Planner ($5,391.00 -$7,227.00 Monthly) This is the entry level professional classification in the Planning Series.  Assistant Planner performs semi-professional level work in the field of urban planning. Typical work responsibilities include case writing, analysis, and public information, requiring the application of fundamental planning principles. Assignments are of moderate difficulty and within the design and procedural framework established by higher level management staff; however, as experience is acquired, the employee performs with substantial independence.

Associate Planner ($6,458.00 – $8,655.00 Monthly) This is the journey level professional class in the Planning Series.  Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the entry level professional classification of Assistant Planner or, when filled from the outside, require prior professional planning work experience. Work involves complex duties with increasing responsibility related to urban planning issues as professional knowledge and skills improve. The Associate Planner provides general guidance and direction to Assistant Planners, Planning Technicians and other administrative support staff.

The City’s Historic Preservation program is on of the oldest in California having started in 1969.Since that time the program has grown to include an ongoing process to survey, record and designate historic resources, an award-winning historic resources inventory database, historic district design guidelines, educational programs, and a historic preservation plan.

For over thirty years, the commitment and participation of the City, community organizations, business leaders and homeowners has ensured the success of Riverside’s preservation program. The California State Office of Historic Preservation has recognized the program with its designation of Riverside as a Certified Local Government (CLG).

Pay Range (Annual): $60,000 – $80,000, $80,000 – $100,000
