Architectural Historian/Historian/Historic Preservation Specialist
Position Description
The Architectural Historian/Historian/Historic Preservation Specialist position will report to the Historic Preservation Specialists, Architectural Historians, and Principal. They will work with a team focused on technical preservation studies including historic structure reports, determinations of eligibility, Section 106 findings, and local resource nominations. IS Architecture frequently has a range of client types- from individual homeowners and civic institutions to large government entities, and we work primarily throughout Southern California and Nevada. Responsibilities / Job Activities
We are seeking an independent thinker who can balance high-quality project research, archive and document organization, and the requests from architectural historians and Historic Preservation Specialists for multiple simultaneous projects, both long-term and short-term. The position requires occasional fieldwork and out-of-town travel.
Cultural Resources Duties (100%)
- Conduct historical research online and in local archives/repositories
- Carry out field surveys, condition assessments, and recordings of built resources
- Develop contextual analyses
- Assist in the writing and production of technical reports and historic architecture projects
- Organize and maintain IS Architecture’s archival materials and resources
Skills and Knowledge
A successful candidate will have:
- A Graduate-level certificate or degree in Architectural History or Historic Preservation, or an undergraduate degree
- Be qualified under the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards (36 CFR Part 61) for architectural history (preferred), history, and/or historic architecture.
- Demonstrated comprehension and experience applying the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties to a wide variety of resources and project types
- Outstanding historical research, analytical, and technical writing skills
- Strong, concise, and clear verbal and writing abilities in the analysis of historic preservation issues, field conditions, and historic contexts.
- Have experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Bluebeam Revu
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- 2 or more years of professional experience
- Have demonstrated experience with archival and online research

Pay Range (Annual): Less than $30,000, $31,000 – $45,000
