Position Overview

Page & Turnbull, one of California’s first architecture and cultural resources planning firms to focus its practice on historic preservation, is offering a position for a Senior Architectural Historian/Preservation Planner who is passionate about reimagining historic resources for the way we live today. Work undertaken in the firm’s Cultural Resources Planning Studio ranges from property-specific evaluations to large-scale planning efforts, including historic context statements for cities and underrepresented communities, survey and evaluation, interpretive programs, Section 106 consultation, tax certification documentation, design guidelines, ordinance updates, and long-range planning initiatives. Our work sits at the nexus of preservation, architectural design, urban planning, cultural planning, and placemaking. We strive to have a meaningful impact on historic places in California and beyond.

You will serve as a project lead, managing staff and guiding projects from proposal through final deliverable. You’ll be working directly with a talented nine-person Cultural Resources Planning Studio team and collaborate with the Architecture & Design and Preservation Architecture studios across all of our five offices.

Qualifications

Page & Turnbull is hiring for a single full-time position which may be based at either our San Francisco or Los Angeles office. We are looking for a Senior Architectural Historian/Cultural Resources Planner with a graduate degree in architectural history, historic preservation, urban planning with a focus on historic preservation, or closely related field. Applicants must have a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in the field, including experience with preparing proposals, managing projects, and supervising staff. Architectural project review and experience applying the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards is required. Familiarity with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is preferred.

Responsibilities

You will contribute to a diverse portfolio of historic preservation and planning projects across a range of scales and property types, including the following:

  • Prepare scope and fee proposals
  • Manage a variety of large and small projects
  • Perform/guide digital and traditional research
  • Visit sites and documenting existing conditions
  • Evaluate properties using National Register of Historic Places, California Register of Historical Resources, and local register criteria
  • Prepare and peer review a variety of reports and studies
  • Review architectural project drawings and recommend improvements that align with compliance requirements and historic preservation best practices
  • Contribute to business development and firm leadership
  • Collaborate with colleagues, architecture and urban planning consultant teams, and clients.

The annual salary for this position ranges from $95,000 to $123,000.
