Back on the Road

It’s time to get back on the road!  The California Preservation Foundation (CPF) and the National Park Service (NPS) is conducting a roadbed survey of California U.S. Highway 66 (Route 66) in San Bernardino County.  CPF and NPS seek to develop a methodology to accurately map alignments of U.S. Highway 66.  The project will utilize a variety of primary sources from 1926, when the route was designated as a U.S. highway, through 1974, when the route was decommissioned.

This phase of the project is part of NPS’ Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program on-going efforts nationally to document the alignments, bridges, buildings, and other associated properties along the route from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California.

This work builds upon earlier work with the completion of a National Register of Historic Places Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) for Route 66 in California.  The MPDF documents the history and significance of the route allowing for consistent and streamlined evaluation of the route and associated properties in California.  Click here for more information about the first project and to view the MPDF.
