We’re celebrating 15 award winning projects, as well as the Trustee’s Awards for Excellence and the President’s Awards at the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Downtown Los Angeles, followed by a special social event with food and drinks in the stunning ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel. Rubel Castle Preservation Plan
Rubel Castle Preservation Plan is one of fifteen winners honored with the 2024 Preservation Design Award. This project was a recipient in the Cultural Resource Studies, Reports category. Award recipients are selected by a jury of top professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, planning, and history, as well as renowned architecture critics and journalists. About Rubel Castle Preservation Plan
The Rubel Castle Historic District (known as Rubel Castle, Rubelia, and Rubel Pharms), is a self-contained, 1.7-acre folk art environment consisting of a walled, 22,000-SF Castle Complex and adjacent, adaptively reused early 20th century citrus buildings. The site includes 14 contributing and 11 non-contributing structures. Rubel, built by volunteers with unconventional materials using unconventional building techniques, possesses unique maintenance challenges.
The Rubel Castle Preservation Plan combines the best of heritage conservation practices and community input to provide a foundation for the preservation and maintenance of this culturally and historically significant site. The Plan is comprehensive; documenting, assessing, and guiding the treatment of the Castle Complex, contributing buildings, and surrounding elements. It provides recommendations aligned with the SOI’s Standard and offers valuable insights for Historic District management. The Plan prioritizes work based on urgency and significance levels, acknowledging the site’s distinct character-defining features.
