About Berkeley Haas Entrepreneurship Hub

The Berkeley Haas Entrepreneurship Hub was originally constructed in 1909 as a single-family residence designed by noted architects Julia Morgan and Ira Hoover. Acquired by the University in 1958, the building has housed several academic departments over the years and has experienced only minimal alteration, retaining a moderately high degree of historic integrity. Character-defining features that remain intact include original woodwork, decorative leaded and wood windows, doors, and porches.

Exterior improvements for the project included comprehensive window and door restoration, stucco cleaning and repair, and the removal of a contemporary wood egress stair on the rear facade. Interior improvements included refinishing historic wood surfaces, installing new custom light fixtures, and completing a full MEP upgrade that converted the building from gas to all-electric systems. Accessibility enhancements added a new front patio to minimize ramping to the front entrance, two accessible restrooms, and a small elevator addition at the rear.

Community Importance

Nestled within an area recognized as both a California Historical Landmark and a Berkeley Landmark for its connection to Frederick Law Olmsted, this building stands as one of the few remaining single-family dwellings in a part of campus increasingly shaped by large-scale development. Its restoration goes beyond preserving historic walls – it preserves a sense of scale, intimacy, and human connection. By maintaining the building’™s residential character, it continues to serve as a welcoming environment where students of all disciplines, faculty, and visitors can gather, exchange ideas, and build relationships. This sense of community is central to the mission of the Berkeley Haas Entrepreneurship Hub, which thrives on collaboration and creativity. At the same time, the building offers students a rare opportunity to experience the residential architecture of Julia Morgan, appreciating both her design sensibility and the way thoughtfully designed spaces can foster connection, engagement, and belonging.
