Culver Studios Historic Building Rehabilitation

Culver Studios is one of fifteen winners honored with the 2024 Preservation Design Award. This project was a recipient in the Rehabilitation category. Award recipients are selected by a jury of top professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, planning, and history, as well as renowned architecture critics and journalists. Tickets and sponsorship options are available at californiapreservation.org/programs/awards/.

The Culver Studios the studio lot is being renovated for 21st Century Studio and Creative Office Use. Four existing Talent Bungalows (S, T, U and V), which occupied the western-central portion of the Studio Campus, were relocated to the yard behind the existing Mansion on top of the roof of the subterranean parking garage on August 2017 and rehabilitated in conformance with the Standards. Bungalows E, H, and I and the Mansion and DeMille Theater were rehabilitated for Creative Office use. Potential impacts were reduced through HABS recordation, laser scanning and 3D modeling, and a relocation and rehabilitation plan was prepared. Minor exterior changes to the Mansion and adjacent Building D were required for accessibility upgrades. Interior tenant improvements for the Mansion, D, E, H and I, were limited in nature to support continued use as offices. The interior rehabilitation work retained and preserved the character-defining features and spaces.
