Overland

Overland is one of fifteen winners honored with the 2024 Preservation Design Award. This project was a recipient in the Rehabilitation category. Award recipients are selected by a jury of top professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, planning, and history, as well as renowned architecture critics and journalists. Tickets and sponsorship options are available at californiapreservation.org/programs/awards/.

About Overland

Constructed in 1912, the Chamber of Commerce had been repurposed for commercial use in the 1980s/90s, which included construction of a large addition at its north facade and other incompatible alterations to the building. This project comprised the building’s rehabilitation into a contemporary, hi-fidelity cocktail bar and kitchen known as The Overland. Improvements included new MEP systems and a state-of-the-art kitchen and bar for house-made draft cocktails. Because the bar features live DJ sets, a custom DJ and sound system was integrated into the interior, and finishes were designed with acoustics in mind.

Because of its proximity to the historic Santa Fe Depot (directly north of and on the same parcel), site improvements were designed with both buildings in mind. The new, freestanding restroom building and patio structure were carefully sited so as not to obstruct important historic views, and the historically open plaza between the two buildings was restored.
