About Sacramento African American Experience Project

The African American Experience (AAE) project in Sacramento is a multifaceted initiative aimed at acknowledging racial injustice, documenting Black history, and challenging misinformation. Funded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the project produced a historic context statement, 41 oral histories, and identified 53 historic resources significant to the Black community. With the support of community partners and stipends, the project engaged diverse voices in the preservation process. Public outreach events, media coverage, and a comprehensive website fostered community involvement. The AAE project lays the groundwork for future research, exhibits, and potential contributions to reparations efforts. Its impact extends beyond the city limits, offering a model for preserving and celebrating African American history in the greater Sacramento region. The collaborative effort involved city staff, community volunteers, subject matter experts, and key partnerships to create a lasting and meaningful contribution to the understanding and preservation of Black heritage in Sacramento.
