Quantifying the Environmental Benefits of Adaptive Reuse

Quantifying the environmental impacts of new buildings versus the reuse and retrofit of existing buildings is a difficult and potentially controversial task. This presentation will confront this challenge head -on by contrasting the embodied energy of materials and construction of existing buildings with operational and maintenance energy of newer, more efficient buildings to determine lowest impacts. It will also examine economic and environmental parameters to determine the viability of building reuse. The results from the study conducted by Green Building Services as commissioned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Cascadia Green Building Council will be discussed as part of this forward-looking webinar.
