The Conference Hotel is the Millennium Biltmore, Los Angeles. We have reserved room blocks available at discounted rates for all conference attendees. Room reservations will be required.

Steve Mouzon, co-founder of the Urban Guild, architect on the award-winning Katrina Cottage VIII, and author of The Original Green will speak about the valuable characteristics of traditional architecture, the inherent sustainability of “pre-thermostat” buildings; and why the YIMBY-NIMBY debate has worsened the housing affordability crisis.

About our Keynote Speaker

Steve Mouzon has led or contributed to many advances in sustainable place-making and building design. He co-founded the Urban Guild, which is a group of architects, designers, and other New Urbanists dedicated to sustainable buildings and places native to and inspired by the regions in which they are built. The Guild was instrumental in the creation of the Katrina Cottages concept. Steve’s Katrina Cottage VIII, which opened the second generation of Katrina Cottages, was awarded a Charter Award by the Congress for the New Urbanism. The Project:SmartDwelling initiative sets out to redefine the American home much smaller, smarter, and more sustainable. Steve’s SmartDwelling I was featured in the Wall Street Journal’s Green House of the Future story alongside designs by three other notable green architects.

Steve is also a principal of Mouzon Design, which produces a number of town-building tools and services. His house plans have been featured repeatedly as Home of the Month in Southern Living and Coastal Living. Steve is Town Architect at several new hamlets, villages and neighborhoods around the country, using a unique face-to-face method of design review he developed that many agree is the most effective in use today. Several of his projects are award-winners.

Steve began the Original Green initiative, with the goal of recovering and advancing patterns of sustainability that kept humanity alive until the Thermostat Age and the emergence of Gizmo Green. Steve’s book, the Original Green, frames sustainability in common-sense, plain-spoken terms. Bobby Kennedy, Jr. wrote the Foreword. Steve has collaborated repeatedly with other notables, including Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk of DPZ and the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, which is Prince Charles’ organization.

Steve’s award-winning book A Living Tradition [Architecture of The Bahamas] sets the standard for a new type of pattern book that is principle-based instead of taste-based, and therefore contributes to the creation of new living traditions. Steve has authored or contributed to a number of publications & articles in recent years, and much has been written about him. He is a noted photographer of great places and buildings. Steve lectures frequently across the country and abroad on a wide range of topics.

He is a board member of the Sky Institute and is the author of Original Green Stories, Useful Stuff, and We Do This Because… He also posts to the Original Green Twitter stream. Steve has made significant contributions as a team leader or team member on a number of significant New Urbanist projects, and is involved in a number of organizations devoted to the building of better and more sustainable places.

Programs include over 40 sessions, tours, and special events. This year, the events include:

• Opening Reception (5/29) at the Julia Morgan-designed Herald Examiner Building, now the Arizona State University California Center Broadway
• President’s Circle Reception (5/30) – an exclusive “thank you” reception for our major donors and sponsors
• The 2024 California Preservation Awards Reception and Ceremony (5/31) at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, DTLA.
• Exhibitors hall and registration area in the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Our conference will include five thematic Tracks:

1. Documentation & Preservation Technology.Overcoming technical challenges using the latest and best practices in preservation.
2. Adapting Historic Places to the Future.Using creativity to move preservation in new directions. Highlighted projects could include examples of well-executed adaptive reuse.
3. Engagement, Interpretation, and Innovation. Demonstrate and discuss the important activities that surround the brick-and-mortar side of preservation, including community outreach and engagement, historic site interpretation and storytelling, and innovative methods for communicating the important role of history in our daily lives.
4. Local Planning Toolkit. Important methods, tools, or case examples for practicing preservation professionals, including preservation ordinances, incentive programs, CEQA processes, and more.
5. Housing. Expert-led training and case examples drawn from historic preservation practice for the retention and adaptive reuse of historic structures for housing, both market rate and affordable.

We will also be exploring special localities and regionally focused sites through “Loving Los Angeles,” where you’ll get an up-close look at some of the Los Angeles region’s best preservation successes and stories.
