Design Awards Co-Chair
Cathy Garrett, PGADesign
Cathy Garrett, ASLA LEED AP, is an award-winning landscape architect with 40 years of experience in historic preservation and design. As principal at MIG | PGA and member of the firm’s Cultural Places Studio, she has successfully led key projects encompassing historic landscapes, educational facilities, high-density housing, and urban civic spaces. Cathy’s approach emphasizes innovative, environmentally responsible solutions that integrate art and science, reflecting her belief in the balance of these elements within landscape architecture. She recently collaborated on the Conservation Master Plan for Rudolf Schindler’s House in West Hollywood and is currently working on the Cultural Landscape Report for Asilomar. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. Cathy is a past-president of CPF. Beyond her professional endeavors, Cathy enjoys foraging for mushrooms, hiking, body-surfing, and traveling, finding inspiration in diverse landscapes and cultures.

Bill Schaeffer, Cello Maudru
Bill Schaeffer serves as the Chief Operations Officer at Cello & Maudru Construction, bringing a rich background in environmental design and construction management. His academic journey in Environmental Design at UC Davis equips him with a unique perspective that bridges understanding between architects, builders, and owners. Since joining the firm in 1996, Bill has been instrumental in introducing innovative technologies and fostering collaborative agreements. His leadership ensures meticulous organization and effective communication across all projects, contributing to the firm’s reputation for excellence. Outside of his professional life, Bill resides in a turn-of-the-century Shingle Style home with his wife Toyoko and daughter Laleh, and dedicates time to restoring classic vehicles, reflecting his passion for craftsmanship and detail.
Enrique Landa, Managing Partner, Fifth Space
Enrique Landa is a Managing Partner at Fifth Space and leads the firm’s investing and development efforts. Enrique and the team recently obtained entitlements and commenced construction on Power Station – a 29-acre project with life science, office, residential and hotel uses on the San Francisco Bay. Enrique has spent his career working with family offices to manage large portfolios and develop real estate projects. A fan of complex problems in need of creative solutions, he is especially drawn to rehabilitating historic buildings, buying assets that aren’t for sale and finding innovative ways to finance affordable housing.
Along the way, he has been known to fall in love with historic buildings, like the Swedish American Hall, which he helped restore, landmark and place on the National Register of Historic Places. Enrique has degrees from the University of Cambridge and University of Pennsylvania. He is a board member of Meals on Wheels and lives with his family in San Francisco.
Amber Long, M.A., Owner & Principal Architectural Historian, Long Historic Preservation Services
Ms. Long is the founder of Long Historic Preservation Services, a Santa Barbara County–based consultancy specializing in built environment services where she is a principal architectural historian. Before founding the company in 2023, she spent 10 years working for environmental planning and cultural resources firms, as well as the County of Santa Barbara. She meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards as a historian and architectural historian and has a strong background working with the California Environmental Quality Act and Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Ms. Long is passionate about the responsible management of historic resources and creative mitigation strategies that balance stakeholder needs. She has collaborated with state and local jurisdictions, the military, nonprofits, developers, and homeowners on projects of varying scales. Her experience includes peer review for local governments and expert witness testimony on CEQA related cultural resource issues. Amber managed the rehabilitation of the Sebastian Store in San Simeon and is currently working on rehabilitation projects in San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach and Montecito. She also consults with Piedras Blancas Light Station on plans to reconstruct two historic Victorian homes. She holds a B.A. in political science and an M.A. in U.S. history from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Peter Moruzzi, Historian, Advocate, and Founding Member of the Palm Springs Modern Committee
Peter Moruzzi is a long-time historian and preservationist with expertise in the architecture of the Modern Movement. He was Chair of the Los Angeles Conservancy’s Modern Committee from 1992 to 1997, and a member of the Conservancy’s board of directors. In 1999, he founded the Palm Springs Modern Committee. For his efforts at preserving Modernist architecture in Palm Springs, Moruzzi received the presidential citation for public service from the American Institute of Architects’ California Council in 2002, the President’s Award from the California Preservation Foundation in 2012, and the UCLA Architecture and Urban Design Award in 2016. He wrote and produced “Desert Holiday”, a documentary chronicling the history of the Coachella Valley as seen through vintage postcards. Moruzzi is also the author of Havana Before Castro: When Cuba Was a Tropical Playground, Palm Springs Holiday, Classic Dining: Discovering America’s Finest Mid-Century Restaurants, and Greetings from Los Angeles. Moruzzi served on the Palm Springs Planning Commissiom and the city’s Historic Site Preservation Board.
Colin Peeples, AIA, Principal, Studio Murnane.
Colin is a licensed Architect with over twenty years of experience in adaptive reuse and historic buildings. His current work focuses on urban infill housing and the application of new technologies in old buildings. As a student Colin spent countless hours exploring the empty warehouses of downtown Los Angeles. He was drawn to questions about the people who built, worked, and lived in these spaces and how they might be used today. To this day, Colin is often the first to explore the attics or crawl spaces of historic buildings, eager to find the shadows of building elements that have been removed or covered up by previous occupants.
Colin received his Master of Architecture from SCI-Arc, where he was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Medal, and his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
His work with Studio Murnane has been recognized by the AIA Los Angeles, the California Preservation Foundation, and the IIDA. Colin lives in Los Angeles with his family, where you can find him snapping pictures of the city’s ever-evolving murals and neighborhoods.
Richard Sucré, Deputy Director, Current Planning Division.
Mr Sucré oversees key areas including historic preservation and current planning work. A respected preservation professional and public-sector leader, he previously served as a consultant with Page & Turnbull and has long been active in advancing thoughtful preservation practice in California. Richard is also a former Trustee of the California Preservation Foundation, reflecting his sustained commitment to preservation advocacy and leadership statewide. He studied at the University of Michigan School of Architecture and the University of Virginia Department of Architectural History, and was awarded a US/ICOMOS internship in 2002, contributing to preservation work in Valletta, Malta. Throughout his career, Richard has been recognized for bridging preservation, planning, and public service in ways that strengthen communities and safeguard cultural heritage.

Jeffrey Caldwell, Wiss Janney Elstner Associates, Inc.
Jeffrey Caldwell, Wiss Janney Elstner Associates, Inc., Pasadena
Jeff Caldwell (Pasadena) has been with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) since 1998 and is a licensed professional engineer in eight states. His experience has focused on the investigation and repair design for failures and performance problems involving a wide variety of building components and materials. These problems often include serviceability and stability failures for building wall systems and structural elements. Mr. Caldwell’s project experience primarily includes failures caused by deficiencies in design or construction, or deterioration of building materials, such as brick, terra cotta, concrete, and glazing systems. His work also frequently investigates failures and repair of historic building facades. He has extensive experience with diagnostic testing to investigate causes of building enclosure failures and water infiltration. Having lived and worked for WJE in Princeton, New York, Boston, and now Los Angeles, Mr. Caldwell has developed an in-depth understanding of a wide range of building construction. His preservation experience ranges from the conservation and strengthening of historical structural concrete and terra cotta systems at Fenway Park and the Fairmont Copley Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and the Los Angeles County Hall of Justice in Los Angeles. Mr. Caldwell is the branch manager of WJE’s Los Angeles office and he is an active member of the Association for Preservation Technology (APTI), a past board member of APT Western Chapter, and is also active with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)..

Since 1983, over 600 projects have been recognized with a Preservation Design Award. Winning projects are selected by a jury of top professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, planning, and history, as well as renowned architecture critics and journalists. The jury selects projects that have furthered, to a notable degree, the purposes of the profession, consistent with the California Preservation Foundation’s mission.
About the President’s Awards
President’s Awards honor people deserving of special recognition for their outstanding preservation efforts. Since its inception in 1991, this program has recognized more than 155 individuals and organizations whose work allows others to gain a deeper appreciation of historic resources and their value to California’s economy, environment and quality of life. All proceeds from this event support the California Preservation Foundation’s statewide education and advocacy programs.
